GAME OPEN - INTRO MINGLE

INTRO MINGLE: BOUNTIFUL BUFFET
NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

New arrivals will continue trickling in as time goes on, always arriving close enough to the Obsidian Fieldlands base camp to be spotted and shepherded back to the safety of Jubilife, or in the vicinity of a material-gathering party who can gather them up as well. Characters are given a spare set of clothes once they arrive at the village. It's usually something resembling a casualwear kimono and trousers, fitted to them specifically.

OOC NOTE: If your character arrived during the TDM, feel free to use that as game canon!

PLANNING PHASE
As the new arrivals begin to show up in force, the Galaxy Team's leader, Kamado, makes more and more visits to the Wallflower. Soon after, the Wallflower's chef and owner puts out a call for help: Ingredients, of all varieties, and extra hands that can prepare and cook food. It seems a big buffet is in the works - and the whole village is invited!

OOC NOTES:
❧ The in game length of the gathering, prep, and meal phases totals 4 days, but feel free to thread well beyond that.
❧ Wildcards and additional prompts are absolutely encouraged here!
❧ Characters who arrived during the TDM may consider those threads canonical to the game if they wish.
❧ Have fun!

GATHERING PHASE (DAYS 1-3)

The request goes out in the early morning on Friday: Ingredients! Food items! As much as you can carry! The reward, the green haired maestro of cooking assures you, will come in time. Though if you can’t be convinced to work for free, he’ll turn over some coin with minimal grumpy mumbling. The ingredients he’s looking for are all easy to locate in the Obsidian Fieldlands - a variety of berries, the ever sweet combs of Dazzling Honey, and the savory Springy Mushrooms that grow at the bases of trees. There are other herbs and plants on the list as well, so feel free to make some up as you go.

The largest barrier to progress is the Combee that guard their precious honey and the Paras that hoard the mushrooms, guarding them fiercely. Whether you choose to sneak in, grab your goods, and sneak out, or do battle with these boisterous pokémon is up to you.

MEAL PREP PHASE (DAYS 3-4)
As loath as he is to admit that he needs help, Beni is allowing folks into his kitchen to slice, dice, and sauteé in preparation for the big day! Ingredients need to be washed, sorted, prepared, and stored safely. Wood needs to be chopped for the cooking fires. New additions to the pantry are still being accepted. Whatever you can contribute helps, Beni assures everyone.

If you’re feeling like there’s too many cooks in the kitchen, tables and benches need to be set up outside. The tables inside need to be washed and set up as well. Decorations are discussed - maybe some colorful lanterns or banners…?

FEAST (DAY 4)

When the day comes, tables and benches are set up in front of Galaxy Hall and filled to the brim with food. Rice, great big hotpots of ramen, plate after plate of mochi - potato or otherwise - and a truly incredible selection of clay pots containing quality teas, brewed fresh for the occasion. And that’s just scratching the surface! Between the Agriculture Corps tireless work on harvesting food and all the new arrivals’ hard fought spoils, the feast is truly grand.

Kamado appears in front of the table just as the first guests start to draw closer to the wonderful arrangement. He gestures with a sweeping motion at the food, and bows his head respectfully.

"If you eat from this table-" he says. "-then you are one of us and we welcome you to our home. We only ask that you work to put food back on our tables moving forward. That you work hard and give Jubilife, and indeed all of Hisui, your best."

GOOD OMENS (NIGHT)
After the feast, as night begins to fall over the village, characters may look up to see that in the clear starry sky, a meteor shower has begun. The shooting stars come in all colors, too, filling the night with a cheerful rainbow incandescence. Locals stop and point, the superstitious among them exclaiming that this is a good omen. A sign that things are looking up. They say there’s an old legend about this sort of meteor shower - that if you make a wish on the colorful streaks in the sky, it just might come true...

Huff watched the creature that was suddenly before her with a measure of amused fascination. Even as Mint circled around in consternation at the, she supposed, potential threat; Her desire to see if the jittery ghost had a texture warred with her experiences with live electrical sources.

The point was rendered moot for her a moment later as a child, gallingly about her height, turned to address the ghost. Huff chuckled slightly at the electrical creature's antics before turning to face him.

"It's fine, no harm done." She exclaimed, waving off the incident. "I'm used to pokemon orbiting my head at this point."

As though to reinforce the point, Mint started orbiting faster, as though to create some sort of theoretical border of protection around his trainer.

"Leaving that aside though, it looks like that crucible isn't quite up to temperature for proper slag off-lay." She said, seeming to switch modes in an instant and thoughtfully coming to stand in front of the furnace. "You want to add some form of packing for that sort of ore striation too." She added, pulling a pouch of white powder from a bag at her waist. "Of course at this stage it might be better to just use some thermomancy if you have any. Don't get me wrong natural fire is great but in these situations..." Huff seemed to realize something.

"Right, Hello, I'm Huff." She said matter of factly, abruptly holding out a hand to shake. "I've seen you around but I don't think we've ever actually spoken. Also your pokemon is very cute."

Assuming it was some sort of a game, Twozo giggles and begins orbiting around Mint, trying to go just as fast, if not faster. Between Mint and Twozo, it almost looks like there's a blue-green halo around Huff, one that briefly distracts Yuga.

"Oh? Is that right? I've never had to make my own metal before or blacksmith." He's had to use power tools and a blowtorch but that's about it. Yuga looks at his poor furnace and then at the bag.

"What's thermomancy?" Is all he gets to say. And then there's a hand. Yuga takes it all in stride and he shakes Huff's hand. "Yuga. Ohdo Yuga. Pleased to meet you, Huff. And that's Twozo. They're a troublemaker." The Rotom shrieks a greeting.

"You seem to know a lot about this stuff, Huff."

Huff nodded approvingly. This child was quick on the uptake, and, more importantly still, clearly able to get right to the point. Huff almost instantly switched her impression from 'smart kid' to 'fellow creator'.

"Nice to meet you Yuga; Twozo." She inclined her head to each. "I'm a smith of sorts by trade actually. Golemancer technically but one goes with the other often as not. As far as the metal is concerned, that's understandable, most smiths tend to buy stock metal. I used to when I was young as well, but knowing how to make your own ingots is a good skill to have." Huff intoned. "Luckily, this area is mindbogglingly mineral rich, so we have a good stock of raw material right out of the gate."

Huff seemed to become lost in thought for a moment before seeming to come to a decision. "Right, I get the impression your world is non-magical like a few others I've heard about. I guess in that context, thermomancy is essentially the manipulation of heat through the primary forces. On my world that means magic, but I've come to gather that things like pressure vessels can serve a similar purpose." She said.

"Now my magic is limited in scope, but very good for these sorts of situations...: She added, quite alarmingly sticking her hand directly in the forge and picking up the red hot lump of ore. "Since I can skip a few steps."

She carefully sprinkled a few pinches of the white powder from the bag onto the still screaming hot lump in her hand. "Since my natural magic is technically a type of ferromancy, or metal manipulation, instead of melting out the slag, I can just get the metal itself to become liquid instead."

She added emphasis to the point by gently wringing the ore like a sponge, causing a slow flow of liquid iron to begin pooling into a quickly solidifying mass on the lip of the forge. "Of course we'll need a good source of pure ash to get this made into something like steel, but annoyingly, you usually need metal or fire brick to make a forge suitable to make higher quality metal at scale."

She seemed to realize that she had been rambling on almost without breathing for a bit, and cleared her throat, seeming slightly embarrassed. She put down the scrap ore along the leading edge of the fire and turned back to Yuga. "Right, come to think of it, I kind of just jumped right in huh. What are you actually making currently?"

The creator in Huff shines so apparently, it's not hard to gather their expertise. The term 'Golemancer' is strange but this person comes from a magical place. He just has to shift his thinking. Considering Yuga himself runs a Magician deck and is used to a mashup of prefixes and and occult-orientated suffixes, he can put two and two together and start making sense of her terms.

"Iron especially. The amount of iron appearing at the surface compared to the rest of the mineral density is really interesting." Any further thoughts Yuga has is quickly wiped by the halfling sticking her hand right into the open flames. His eyes are sparkling with scientific curiosity as the iron is liquified and poured onto the forge.

"For now, I'm just happy for any parts I can tinker with." He laughs. "Don't worry about jumping in! Your magic is super interesting. I've never seen real magic before!" He claps his hands. "I'm trying to build some capacitors. Power is the first step for building machines and then for building Roads!"

"The iron density really is incredibly high." Huff muses, tapping her fingers on the forge. "I wonder if it is the result of something geological, or, well, pokemon based." She shrugs "A question for another time." She decides.

As Huff hears Yuga's primary focus her interest seems piqued.

"Capacitors hm? Those don't get much use where I'm from due to the lower efficiency to magic-based energy storage, but I agree that would be a good first step. The only real step in that direction actually, as far as I can tell, as I'm not an Evocation specialist." She says, seeming to stifle a slight sigh. "Where's the giant troublemaker when you need her..." She grumbles under her breath.

"Anyway, Roads are a good time investment for certain. If you are having trouble with the iron extraction part of things, I can step in there. I'm not familiar with capacitor construction in a non-magitech schema, so if you can handle that part of things, I think we can start accelerating the process."

So saying, Huff turns to pick up another piece of unprocessed ore, seemingly ready to get directly to it.

"It'll be interesting to look into why that is." Yuga's already thinking of what they would need to build in order to test that. But one thing at a time, first.

"Troublemaker? Is that someone here or someone where you're from?" The boy asks curiously. He smiles as Huff agrees with him though and nods.

"Okay. First, we need some sheets of iron. If we get those set up, they'll be easier to manipulate and fold into capacitors. I'm thinking something like 12x12 and I'll cut them down if need be. Oh! Can you manipulate the iron into shapes? Manipulating the iron into conductive wires will be really useful!"

[personal profile] huffrunda 2022-03-24 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Huff nodded at Yuga’s enthusiasm.

“Indeed, and, someone from back home.” She said, faltering for a moment. “Someone who would be much better suited to… all of this.” She said with a sigh.

“That aside though, sheets should be easy enough, shapes are a little harder but doable? I can manipulate metals a bit like sculptable material. I’ve only recently started making wires after some discoveries back home, but I can definitely do it. It’s a bit like making thread actually. Reminds me of my stupid seamstress tutor, she would be so smug if she knew this was actually useful in my life.”
sevens_road: (hm?)

[personal profile] sevens_road 2022-03-28 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yuga nods, a little more seriously. It's not hard to see that Huff misses their friend. They all have loved ones at home who miss them.

"Heh... Is it now? Clothes making is one invention I've never tried. It's way more artsy than what I'm used to. But I guess we are weaving a circuit so it make sense. How many are you able to make? Honestly, I'll take whatever I can get."

[personal profile] huffrunda 2022-03-28 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Huff considered this for a few moments, tapping a finger on the forge. “Well it’s not so much a question of a specific amount as much as just material over time cost.” She elaborated after a few seconds. “Over a span of time I can make a few spools of wire without issue, it’s just time consuming.”

She seemed to consider something. “I guess if we can get some sort of die for me to shape it with that might make it faster overall?” She shrugged, “overall though I should be able to get you a few dozen feet of good wire before I head out to start my next project in the pass.”

"I can make a simple die from wood for now. But a dozen feet sounds fantastic. I can make something to make wires later. Thank you so much!"

Yuga takes the iron ore he's collected out of his bag. As he lays it all out on the wooden table, he looks over at Huff curiously. "Project? What's your next project?"

Huff grinned at the question.

“I think it is time I got a less flammable workspace so I’m going to see about getting some stoneworks going, assuming there aren’t any yet.”

She shrugged, seeming a bit resigned. “I’ve gotten a Wierd amount of pushback on the idea but I mean, we can’t have every building we are working with fire in be one dropped ember away from burning down.”

[personal profile] sevens_road 2022-04-10 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh! That sounds like a great idea!" Yuga perks up. "Dunno why you would be getting resistance though. Concrete's a good invention. Boring, sure, but necessary for all sorts of cool stuff. Do you need help with that? Having a good workplace would make inventing so much safer!"

[personal profile] huffrunda 2022-04-24 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
Huff smiled despite herself. The kid's enthusiasm was a welcome departure from the more....subdued reactions she had recently received.

"Absolutely!" she agreed with a stalwart nod. "Building materials that don't catch fire are a pretty necessary step. As to the resistance, it seems like people just aren't keen to adopt new technologies currently." She added with a shrug.

"I guess when the world around you is full of mostly creatures capable to shooting fire at you or what have you, innovation takes a bit of a back seat."

She stared out at the sky for a moment. "I never thought I'd say this but i think im starting to miss the presence of normal non-sentient cows and such for non food related reasons."
